The Eiffel Tower is a 330-metre puddled-iron lattice tower built by engineer Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 World's Fair, which marked the centenary of the French Revolution. Originally designed as a temporary attraction and criticised by part of the Parisian art world, it is today the most-visited paid monument in the world and a recognised symbol of France. The Eiffel Tower has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991 as part of the "Paris, Banks of the Seine" listing.
The Eiffel Tower has three levels open to the public: the 1st floor at 57 metres, the 2nd floor at 116 metres and the summit at 276 metres. The first two floors can be reached by lift or stairs, the summit only by two successive lifts. An observation platform and champagne bar are at the summit; the 1st floor houses the Madame Brasserie restaurant and a glass floor. The structure is run by the Société d'Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel (SETE), 99% owned by the City of Paris.
Access is via security check with a timed ticket, strongly recommended in advance — especially for the summit, whose daily capacity is limited. Waiting without a ticket can exceed two hours in peak season. The Eiffel Tower is open seven days a week all year, with extended hours in summer (until midnight in June–August).
The Eiffel Tower is open all year. The first hour of the day (09:30–10:30) and the last (after 21:00) offer the shortest waits and the best light for photography. Summer in full daylight concentrates peak visitor numbers: high temperatures on the exposed platform, summit queues that can exceed two hours. Winter is calmer but the summit may close in strong winds. The nightly sparkle, every hour from dusk to 01:00, is one of the highlights of a visit.
