In the 12th century, building a bridge over the Rhône was an extraordinary challenge: sole structure between Lyon and the sea, it diverted from Arles, deprived of its ancient bridge, the traffic of the old Domitian Way. It had to ensure the passage of merchants and pilgrims who, via the Alpine pass, travelled to or returned from Italy. It thus increased the importance of the City of Avignon, which became a more cosmopolitan city of commerce and passage.
