Site of captivity of Pope Pius VII between 1812 and 1814, Fontainebleau becomes the theatre of the collapse of the First Empire in April 1814. It is at the château that Napoleon I abdicates on 4 and 6 April, and after a famous farewell address to his old guard in the Cour d'Honneur, departs into exile on the island of Elba.
