The palace is built in baroque style by architect Nicodemus Tessin the Younger and designed as a Roman palace. The palace has more than 600 rooms distributed over eleven storeys with state rooms facing the city and smaller residential rooms facing the inner courtyard.

Det Kungliga slottet är en kombination av kungligt residens, arbetsplats och kulturhistoriskt monument, och öppet för besökare året om. Slottet är byggt i barockstil av arkitekt Nicodemus Tessin den yngre och gestaltat som ett romerskt palats. Slottet har mer än 600 rum fördelade på elva våningar med paradrummen utåt staden och de mindre bostadsrummen mot den inre borggården.
