Animals, even small ones, cannot enter the Vatican Museums or the Castel Gandolfo Museum Complex. Only guide dogs for the blind can enter, if they wear a muzzle and leash.Translation · original in French
Les animaux, même petits, ne peuvent pas entrer dans les Musées du Vatican, ni dans le Pôle Muséal de Castel Gandolfo. Seuls les chiens-guides pour non-voyants peuvent entrer, s'ils ont une muselière et une laisse."The Vatican, the Museum of Museums," not only houses the extensive collections of art, archaeology and ethno-anthropology gathered by the Popes over the centuries, but also contains some of the Apostolic Palace’s most extraordinary and artistically significant rooms.
Not official
The Vatican Museums are the museums of the Holy See: some 70,000 works in 54 galleries along a route that ends in the Sistine Chapel. The chapel is part of the museums and is entered only with a museums ticket; there is no separate Sistine Chapel ticket. The entrance is on Viale Vaticano, a fifteen-minute walk around the walls from St Peter's Square, and the two are visited separately: the basilica is free and has its own queue.
The only official ticket site is tickets.museivaticani.va. The museums' own page says so in as many words and warns of look-alike domains charging more. A ticket bought there costs €20 plus a €5 booking fee; the same ticket at the door costs €20 without the fee, with the queue that implies.
The museums open at 08:00 Monday to Saturday and the Sistine Chapel is the last room on the route, so the first hour is the quietest it gets. The free last Sunday of the month closes at 14:00 with final entry at 12:30, and is the busiest morning of the month. The museums are closed on ordinary Sundays and on thirteen feast days a year, listed above.
